Parker the dog has listened to a lot of excellent reading so far this year! Camestone School has initiated a unique incentive to reward pupils who achieve their weekly reading target and to also reward pupils who have made noticeable progress throughout foundation and key stage one.
Rewarding frequent reading
Teachers use Learning with Parents’ digital reading log’s register page to easily identify pupils who have met their reading at home target and then enter them into a weekly ballot. Teachers also nominate pupils who have made the most effort and progress. Winners get drawn each week and get the chance to read their book to Parker, the school dog. This is the start of Camestone’s new initiative, and the school intends to roll this out across the school shortly.
Kerry Young, Deputy Headteacher, said: ‘Since introducing this initiative we’ve seen an improvement in the number of pupils regularly reading at home. The children really enjoy reading their book to Parker and he loves to listen to their stories, there is a real buzz about it around the school!’
Celebrating engagement in reading
Parker is quite the celebrity at Camestone School, his face is on posters throughout the school promoting the incentive and encouraging pupils to read at home to be in with a chance of winning. Alongside reading to Parker, Camestone School also use a house point system and reading raffle, regularly celebrating individuals and classes who have achieved their target in assemblies.
This whole-school approach of celebrating and rewarding pupils for reading at home has helped to embed the digital reading log and resulted in excellent levels of engagement. But of course, it’s Parker who has to really take the credit!
