In this month’s Staff Spotlight we speak to Alice, our Fundraising and Communications Officer.
Tell us a bit about what you did before joining Learning with Parents
During my last year at university I volunteered with Bristol Best Tuition at a Year 6 Maths and English booster class, as well as working at the University of Bristol as a Student Ambassador for Widening Participation. Both of these experiences affirmed my interest in education and passion for tackling educational inequality.
I came across an internship with Learning with Parents whilst looking for graduate job opportunities in education and quickly applied. I completed a month full time internship with Learning with Parents (then called Maths with Parents) in August 2019 before returning as a full time member of staff in January 2020. I’ve now been here for almost five years and had many different roles over that time.
What first drew you to Learning with Parents?
I’d never heard of parental engagement before, so I was really interested to read about Learning with Parents’ programme and how they supported parents to engage with their children’s education.
I struggled with a lot of the Maths at the Year 6 booster class I volunteered at, despite having completed an AS in Maths just a few years previously. I couldn’t remember the division or multiplication techniques, and a lot of terminology had changed. This helped me to see how a parent might also struggle to help with their child’s learning, and I thought the Learning with Parents’ programme seemed like a great way to bridge that gap between school and home.
What’s the day-to-day of your role like?
There’s a lot of variety in my role, which I really enjoy. One of my favourite things about working at Learning with Parents is the opportunities to work across lots of different areas.
On the fundraising side, my day-to-day tasks include researching potential funders, writing grant proposals and keeping funders up to date on our work. My communications role includes overseeing our social media, keeping the website up to date, and managing our organisational newsletters.
What’s the most exciting thing you are working on right now?
It’s nearly the end of the academic year, so at the moment I’m spending a lot of time looking at the impact we’ve had ready to get started on planning our impact report. It’s been wonderful to reflect on everything we’ve achieved over the year.
What’s your favourite thing about working at Learning with Parents?
My favourite thing by far about working at Learning with Parents is the people! It’s great to work in a team of such passionate people with shared values and a passion for reducing educational inequality.
