In this month’s Staff Spotlight we speak to Maeve, who joined the Learning with Parents team as a School Partnership Manager in August of this year.
Tell us a bit about what you did before joining Learning with Parents
Over the last 17 years, I have been a primary school teacher in Bristol. For a large chunk of this time, I have specialised in Early Years education and I am currently a part time nursery school teacher. In the past I have spent time teaching in an international school in Madrid, where I supported children to learn English. I have spent a lot of time working with colleagues across Bristol to develop best practice for our youngest of learners.
What first drew you to Learning with Parents?
As a teacher, I am committed to supporting all families in their child’s learning journey and have developed strong relationships with the parents that I work with. At the same time, I understand the challenges that families face in supporting their children with learning and engaging with school. The ethos and values of Learning with Parents fits into my own practice in school and I am interested in how my role in the charity can also support my classroom teaching and relationships with my school community.
What’s the day-to-day of your role like?
I recently started my role as School Partnership Manager and am working with Learning with Parents for part of the week. At the moment, I spend my time supporting schools to launch the Maths and English programme as well as the new digital reading log – Weread. I am excited to continue working with these schools throughout the year ahead, to help them in their journey to engage families in home learning.
An exciting part of my role is to communicate the vision and values of Learning with Parents to schools that may be interested in using the programme in the future. It’s great to be able to speak to different school communities throughout the country and discuss best practice for engaging families in home learning.
What’s the most exciting thing you are working on right now?
As a new member of the team, I am excited about working within a charity that seeks to improve parental engagement through research, working with schools and hearing from families directly. I am enjoying speaking to schools across the country and supporting them to reflect on improving family engagement at their settings.
What’s your favourite thing about working at Learning with Parents?
I feel extremely supported by the team at Learning with Parents who have a strong belief in the vision of the charity. Supporting disadvantaged families and working with schools to make an impact on parental engagement, is at the heart of everything the charity does. Each member of the team strives to do their very best to enable schools to engage families in the most effective way possible. Not only do I feel supported by the team around me but also inspired by their values and vision.
