“We have loved using Learning with Parents and have seen a huge impact in a short time.”
Tracy Cavanagh, Headteacher
At Holy Rosary RC Primary School in Oldham, Headteacher Tracy Cavanagh has been searching for innovative ways to support families at home. Many families at the school request homework tasks for their children and Tracy has been thinking creatively about how to do this. Tracy loves the Learning with Parents programme because it supports families at home to enjoy games and practical activities with their children whilst at the same time reduces teacher workload.
Accessible for all families
She has also been impressed by how accessible the platform is to all families. At Holy Rosary there are a range of families with different home environments and she believes that the programme is designed in a way that all children and their parents can access the activities because they are available on a mobile phone.
Before using the Learning with Parents platform, the school had tried many initiatives to engage families, with varying degrees of success. Tracy acknowledged that she wasn’t sure about the prospects initially, due to the difficulties in the past reaching parents:
“I was very skeptical about it to begin with as engagement from families has always been challenging… this has blown away any expectation we had”.
Motivating families
The Maths and English activities have been especially helpful in providing motivation for pupils and families to engage in homework.
In particular, families of children in Year 6 are benefiting from the programme and children who found it difficult to access learning at home are now feeling motivated by the fun activities available to them:
“There is one Year 6 child who has been really struggling… and within 24 hours of launching they had posted a comment saying, ‘Really enjoyed doing it as a family!’”
Increasing reading engagement
The school have also been making excellent use of our Digital Reading Log to help increase engagement from families around reading. Pleasingly, Tracy has noticed that families who have previously found it difficult to log reading are now engaging.
Tracy has also witnessed an increase in families uploading reading comments on the Digital Reading Log. To celebrate all of the reading taking place, Tracy uses the class activity feed to look at photos and comments left by families. She saves these photos to share with the wider community such as the Governors and CFOS, the local Catholic Schools cluster.
“We have so many really lovely photos and comments. I look at them all the time and save the best ones to share.”
Top tips for building parental engagement
We’d like to thank Tracy and Holy Rosary for sharing the positive impact that the platform has had in their school. Helpfully, Tracy has also shared some top tips for other schools who are using our platform and looking for imaginative ways to build engagement with families:
Things that have worked well….
- We successfully launched the platform alongside parents’ evening, with a dedicated point of contact for support. Parents have found the process easy as they don’t have a password to remember and get scheduled reminders
- Creating a parent guide booklet with information about home-learning and reading log. This helped us target those who had not signed up and who may be missing out
- Teachers focus on acknowledging contributions during morning entry, creating a positive start to the day. They’ve also enjoyed creating personalised versions of the stickers, and pupils love to get a sticker from the headteacher!
