How Heron Cross are promoting reading
We love to hear all the wonderful ways our schools are celebrating and promoting reading, with the support of our digital reading log. We were especially impressed when we caught up recently with Miss Whitehead from Heron Cross Primary School and heard all about their new reading initiative.
Heron Cross recently added a new vending machine to their school – but not your ordinary snack-filled vending machine. This machine stocks something far more fulfilling – books!
The vending machine, generously gifted by another school, was installed to help promote reading for pleasure. The books it contains were purchased using funds raised during their recent Scholastic Book Fair.
A game-changer for engagement
Teachers at the school have been using the Learning with Parents digital reading log to monitor pupils who achieve their weekly reading targets. Each week, one dedicated pupil is named Reader of the Week and receives a special token. This token can be used in the book vending machine to select and keep a book of their choice.
Miss Whitehead explained how the book vending machine has encouraged children to read more regularly at home, in order to meet their target and be in with a chance of winning:

“The vending machine has truly ignited a love for reading in our school. The children are thrilled to earn a token and can’t wait to use it to pick their very own book—it’s been a game-changer for building excitement around reading!”![]()
Heron Cross are in their first year of using our digital reading log, and use it across the whole school, from pre-school to year 6. They have seen excellent engagement, with pupils submitting lots of comments, audio clips and photos.
Teachers have also been enjoying using the reading log, especially using the ticks, stickers and comments to respond to the reading entries.

Innovative ideas to embed a love of reading
As well as the star appeal of the book vending machine, the school has established lots of other great reading initiatives to promote reading, and to really embed the reading log within the school.
Every week teachers set a reading challenge to encourage engagement and amusing photos which are then shared. A highlight has been ‘reading whilst eating’ which resulted in some interesting snack choices, but encouraged lots of reading.
Every morning, after registration, all teachers go through the reading log and share photos and audio clips. Every class has a display board of a reading tracker and the pupils move their car along the track every time they read at home. This is a great visual way to show progress.
Teachers also use the reading log when talking to parents about literacy and share their child’s activity feed with them. Reader of the Week winners are also shared with parents on Class Dojo, which is a great way to celebrate reading and engage parents.
A big thank you to Heron Cross for sharing these great tips!
