Following on from our recent blog about parental engagement and why it’s important, we thought we’d take a closer look at Learning with Parents’ approach to building parental engagement in learning for schools and families. Our mission is to tackle educational inequality by driving inclusive parental engagement in schools and through thought leadership in the sector, gathering insights on best practice and sharing them with others.
Parents as experts
At Learning with Parents, we know that parents are experts in their children, but we don’t expect them also to be experts in teaching. Our programme empowers families by providing the knowledge and resources they need to support their child’s learning in a fun, pressure-free way. Our activities are designed to be screen-free, playful and hands-on, focusing on fostering high-quality interactions and encouraging open-ended exploration, rather than seeking perfect answers.
We prioritise meaningful discussion and exploration in our activities, supporting parents and children in exploring diverse approaches to learning. This flexibility, with options tailored to different schedules and interests, ensures our programme can meet each family where they are. Whether parents spend five minutes or an entire evening exploring an activity, these interactions build connections, confidence, and curiosity, nurturing a lifelong love of learning in every child.
Key themes
Our activities are crafted with a number of key themes:
Talk
Talk fosters understanding. All of our curriculum-linked activities encourage discussion, allowing children to process and deepen their learning, not just in English, but in Maths too.
Play
Children learn best through play, from infancy through to adulthood. We tap into this natural learning approach, using playful exploration to cultivate engaged, creative learners.
Exploration
Kids are innate scientists! Every activity encourages exploration, promoting lifelong adaptability and learning.
Real-World Learning
Our online platform encourages families to get off their screens. All of our activities take place offline and are designed to happen in everyday settings, helping parents and children recognise learning opportunities in daily life.
Fun and Collaborative
Learning should be enjoyable. We ensure that parents know their role in each activity so families can dive right in and enjoy the experience together.
Sharing our learning
In order to learn how to better foster parental engagement in children’s learning across all communities, we collaborated with the Fair Education Alliance to establish and lead the Parental Engagement Forum. This forum brings together a wide variety of organisations, ranging from large national charities to grassroots, community-focused groups. Through our regular online forum, we exchange best practices, foster networking, and explore research around supporting families that face the greatest barriers and narrowing the attainment gap.
