We spoke to Nikki Ashitey, about her experience of using the Learning with Parents platform.
The Learning with Parents’ programmes have bridged the gap between home and school for my child and for me. I wish Maths with Parents had been available when my daughter was at primary school because I never knew how to support her learning. It was confusing and frustrating for her because the way I showed her how to do Maths was different to how her teacher showed her. She still lacks confidence in Maths and reading; I know Maths with Parents and English with Parents would have helped her.
I feel more connected to school and this has helped me build a stronger relationship with my son’s teacher.
I have been able to use Maths with Parents with my son since he started school and engaging in his learning feels completely different. Thanks to the videos I feel more in control because I know what is being taught in the classroom and how they are teaching it. I feel more connected to school and this has helped me build a stronger relationship with my son’s teacher.
The videos are really powerful because they are presented by children. When we watch the video, it reminds my son how he learnt the maths topic in the classroom and this has worked wonders for his confidence. He will say ‘I am so good at Maths!’ It is heart-warming to hear. We have just started doing some of the English with Parents phonics activities and these are helping him too.

The great thing with Learning with Parents is that it has such a positive impact without taking up lots of time or extra resources. The pressure is off. We have a 45-minute train journey each day and we do it then sometimes. I can get my phone out, watch the video and we do some of the activities on the go.
My son and I always do at least 2 or 3 of the activities in each topic because we enjoy doing them so much. He enjoys using his own things to do the activities, and this helps him link maths to the real world. My daughter also likes getting involved and we play the games and do the activities as a family.
